I'll have a full write-up in the next issue of
Harp Magazine, but I thought I'd briefly mention this early 70's gem.
Bill Withers' debut record
Just As I Am featured sad but sweet, poetic gems like 'Ain't No Sunshine" (a well-deserved hit) and "Grandma's Hands." I had this on vinyl for years but hadn't thought to play it until the recent Columbia reissue (which includes some nice video/DVD goodies from the time)- I guess that's part of what reissues are for. Later, BW would have other touching chart-toppers like "Lean On Me" and "Just the Two of Us."
